Water and microfinance
Microfinance has been used in the context of helping poor individuals generate a direct income (understand the basics of microfinance here). However, providing access to water historically has not been seen as an “income-generating endeavor”. Therefore, microfinance and the water sector have not often been linked. However, we challenge this idea.
Through providing water and sanitation facilities, we:
-
Enable girls to go to school and receive an education since fetching water will not consume their day. Access to toilets in schools will allow girls to continue to attend school after they reach puberty.
-
Prevent lost workdays by minimizing waterborne diseases. Providing clean water and toilets will prevent contamination of food and water (by parasites, viruses, and bacteria in poop) and improve health.
-
Sustainability of the facilities that we help install because families are involved in the implementation process and pay for the facilities themselves.
